The Helsinki REDS have expanded into console gaming, signing Erik “Eki” Tammenpää as their first-ever NHL player.
Born and raised in the greater Helsinki area, Tammenpää has a long history in conventional ice hockey. He played as a goalie in Espoo for 13 years before swapping to esports, where the NHL franchise was a clear choice for him. Tammenpää has already earned a reputation in Finland over the course of the last year and just recently won the European regional finals of the NHL World Championship tournament. He will be competing for the WC title in June, when he will be traveling to Las Vegas for the finals.
“As our owner, HIFK, is a conventional hockey club, the idea of signing a world-class console player has been in works since the inception of the Helsinki REDS. As with every game, we wanted to take our time and find the people we really believe will take their game to the next level, a feat that has already become a reality with Erik,” commented Christer Kasurinen, the general manager of the organization.
