Erik “Eki” Tammenpää has won the first-ever NHL Gaming World Championship in Las Vegas. Eki did not drop a single game on his march to victory, which started from the online qualifiers where he won his trip to the European finals that were held in Stockholm, Sweden.

Some said he was too cocky after he essentially declared before the finals that he would win. Eki disagrees: “this win was for my mom,” he said. “She has cancer. I just got so much out of that mentally. Some people probably think I’m too cocky because of some comments I made, but it’s not that: I just wanted to win this thing so much.”

For the NHL esports scene, there is still much to improve. Now, at least, there is a good foundation to build upon, whereas before this year, there was none.

CONGRATULATIONS TO EKI ON A BIG JOB WELL DONE!
